Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary is a wildlife reserve quite popular among tourists situated in the flood plains of river Brahmaputra in the Morigaon district of the state of Assam. Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary is located about approximately 30 km east of the capital city of Guwahati. The Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary is about 48 km by road from Guwahati. It is a 1-hour drive through a road passing by River Brahmaputra, and a small portion of the village of Mayong. It has a dense population of the Great Indian one-horned rhinoceros.

The Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary covers 38.8 km2. Though the total notified area of the park is 38.80 square kilometres, only 16 square kilometres is the effective rhino habitat. Pobitora was declared a reserved forest in 1971 and a wildlife sanctuary in 1987. It covers flat flood plains and a hillock (Raja Mayong).

This wildlife sanctuary is mainly famous for its great Indian One-horned rhinoceros besides which tourists can see other animals such as the leopard, wild boar, barking deer, wild buffalo and more than 375 species of birds found in the area.

Assam’s Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary is also home to more than 2000 migratory birds and various reptiles. Currently the Pobitora wildlife sanctuary is home to 93 rhinos, a ten per cent increase over the last six years. These 93 rhinos are surviving on merely 16 square kilometre area of the park.

The sanctuary is situated at an altitude and one can see tall grasses and a diverse vegetation spread over it. The natural landscape of Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary is a breathtaking experience for tourists and an admirers of nature.

One can visit the Sanctuary from Guwahati. The closest airport to the sanctuary is the Gopinath Bordoloi airport in Guwahati and the closest railway station is the Guwahati Station.



Elephant rides and jeep safaris are the best way to explore the sanctuary and spot some wildlife. The elephant safari is available at 6.30am, 7.30am and 2.30pm. The jeep safari is available at 7am and 3pm daily. Boat safaris are available at 9am and 3pm daily.
